MTA Public Hearing @ Cronin Auditorium
LISTEN TO THE MEETING
AUDIO (MP3 format)
Ten letters from the Mulry family itself showed up at the September 24th MTA hearing held at St. Vincent’s by Community Board 2. Each Mulry descendant
expressed concern about the loss of its commemoration for Thomas M. Mulry, the Teddy Roosevelt appointee for which the square is named. He once lived at Perry Street and 7th Avenue.
Neighbors made themselves heard about the Mulry Angle and its connection to the community—from its Edward Hopper fame to its historical landscape. They spoke out about the lack of green space, the fragile nature of surrounding buildings, environmental impact and traffic congestion. Fears were expressed that the MTA needs to take nothing to heart and are not subject to any review.
Tom Duane lightened the mood with his whimsical touch.
The MTA says it is obligated to take into consideration all community feedback. That feedback, however, must be written. So start sending.
For certain, this meeting was only the beginning. Yet, from our perspective there were a lot of familiar faces, but not enough new community participation. Please get people involved.
